Microsoft president Brad Smith who is in India spoke with the media in a meeting. He revealed that Microsoft is currently working with the Indian govement to link Skype with the Aadhar database so that it can be used to make authenticated calls with govement institutions and others.

“We have been pursuing work, initially on a pilot basis, to use this specific technology and integrate it with Skype. We see Skype evolving in a way that will enable someone at home to authenticate themselves with using that ID system with a fingerprint or iris scan and then communicate with someone on the other end, maybe even a govement agency, which will know that person is the same as he or she is claiming to be,” Smith said, adding that this will enable people to testify in a govement proceeding or get a licence.

The kind of convenience this can bring to people’s lives will be significant, he said, adding how you will not need to travel long distances for many requirements and will be able to do things in front of a computer.

Microsoft yesterday released Windows 10 Build 14267 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 Education users can now join Windows Insider Program and start receiving Insider builds.

If you’re a student or teacher running the Windows 10 Education edition – you can now go to Settings > Update & security > Advanced options and opt-in your PC to receive Insider Preview builds. By joining the Windows Insider Program and running Windows 10 Education – you can help to shape the future of Windows for education customers.

Windows 10 Education is available through Microsoft Volume Licensing. Individual students in schools participating in the DreamSpark program or eligible for the Windows student use benefit may also be able to download Windows 10 Education as a benefit of their school’s partnership with Microsoft.

Microsoft is planning to its App-V virtualization client into Windows 10 with the upcoming Redstone release. For those unfamiliar with App-V, it’s a management system for IT pros which allows them to “better administer a catalog of existing Win32 apps including techniques for app-to-app isolation, consistent lifecycle management mechanisms and usage tracking”.

Now, Microsoft is apparently planning to “tightly” integrate App-V with Windows 10 Redstone. Microsoft will be working on integrating Windows 10 Enterprise, and they will continue to use App-V 5.1 Server infrastructure to ensure the integration works perfectly without causing any issues for existing users.

Here’s my Microsoft’s timeline for App-V for the Redstone 1 release:

• Simplify deployment and servicing
• Deliver seamless in-place upgrades (from App-V 5.1)
• Fully backward compatible; won’t break anything

And here’s the company’s plans for Redstone 2 release:

• Reduce cost of classing Windows application management
• Tighter integration with other Microsoft products

In case you don’t know, Microsoft is expected to release the Redstone 1 update for Windows 10 sometime around June of this year while the Redstone 2 update is expected to get released in the Fall.

Microsoft released Windows 10 Build 14267 to Insiders in the Fast ring just about 1 hour ago. The latest build of Windows 10 introduces a few new features and improvements, mostly for Microsoft Edge. With the latest build, Microsoft finally added the ability to send pictures in a Skype conversation with Messaging + Skype app – however, I was unable to send pictures in the app and got an error which isn’t surprising at all. The update also allows users to show the icons/favicons in Microsoft Edge, which is a nice feature. Additionally, the build also introduces the ability to automatically clear your browsing history every time you close Microsoft Edge, which could come in handy at times.

Microsoft is currently testing Outlook.com Premium service. Outlook.com Premium has nothing to do with the current Ad-free Outlook.com which you can get for $19.95 USD a year. The Outlook.com Premium Preview will offer a personalized email address for you to create and manage. This is similar to the custom domain support which Microsoft was offering on Hotmail and later discontinued. Microsoft confirmed that they are evaluating interest in custom domains for Outlook.com.

At this time, we are testing with a limited number of users in the United States and will evaluate the experience over time. The previous program required the user to manage the process of purchasing a domain. We are evaluating the appeal of custom domains but with Microsoft managing the processes of procuring the domain.

Microsoft’s support page for this Outlook.com Premium is now live and it details how the personalized  email address service will work.

Microsoft has partnered with GoDaddy to supply the email domain you choose to power your personalized email address. Personal email domain names are subject to availability and GoDaddy’s terms. Microsoft has paid for the first year of support with GoDaddy for the domain. Your personal email domain does not renew with your Outlook Premium or Office 365 annual subscription. You can renew the domain on an annual basis directly with GoDaddy or the domain registrar of your choice after the first year; additional charges may apply. You will receive a notice to renew the domain registration shortly before the one-year anniversary of your subscription.

If you decide to discontinue use of your personal domain, Microsoft will provide the option on the Outlook.com Domain Dashboard to close your domain. If you close your domain, you, and the other members of your personal domain, will stop receiving email at your personal email addresses. You will continue to receive email to your original email addresses.

For $20 per year, if Microsoft offers custom domain support and ad free experience, will you be happy to sign-up?

Microsoft today released a new Windows 10 build for Insiders in the first program. The company today released build 14267, which isn’t a big update from build 14257. The latest build does not introduce a lot of new stuff – however, as usual, there are some general improvements and bug fixes.

One of the most notable addition in this build is the ability send pictures using the Messaging + Skype app. Yep. Finally.

Here’s what’s new:

Search for music easier in Cortana: We have made it easier to invoke music search in Cortana by adding a music search icon to the top right of Cortana. You can now open Cortana on your PC and click on the music search icon to have Cortana listen and search for the song that’s playing.

Favorites bar improvements in Microsoft Edge: If you have the favorites bar enabled in Microsoft Edge, you can now right-click on the favorites bar and choose to have it only show the favicons only. You can also right-click to add new folders in your favorites bar as well.

Clear browsing data when you exit Microsoft Edge: You can now choose to have your browsing data cleared when you exit Microsoft Edge. Just click on the three dots at the top right in Microsoft Edge and go into Settings, click on the “Choose what to clear” button under “Clear browser data” and enable “Always clear this after I close the browser” after choosing what data you want cleared.

Improved Download Prompts in Microsoft Edge: You can now configure Microsoft Edge to show a prompt when you start a download, allowing you to choose where to save the file. Just open the Microsoft Edge settings pane (the three dots at the top right) and look for the option under “Downloads settings”.

Messaging + Skype improvements: You can now attach photos to your Skype messages by clicking or tapping on the paperclip icon at the lower left as you’re composing a new Skype message to a contact. Additionally, you can also invoke the Camera app to take a photo to attach to your Skype message too or send along your location.

Microsoft today released Windows 10 Build 14267 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build includes several new features, read about them here. It includes some bug fixes and a known issue. Find them below.

Here’s what’s fixed:

• Choosing “Reset This PC” under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery should now work as expected.
• You should no longer see a WSClient.dll error dialog after logging in.
• The front-facing camera should be usable again on PCs with Intel RealSense cameras and you should be able to use Windows Hello again.
• We fixed an issue where incorrect storage capacity was provided for the system volume (the hard drive in which Windows is installed on) under Settings > System > Storage.

Known issues:

If you’re using Hyper-V and upgrade to this build with more than one vswitch or have multiple virtual networking adapters (including legacy), you may lose networking connectivity after upgrade. To get network connectivity back, there are two workarounds available:

• Remove all the virtual network adapters connected to the vswitch, delete the vswitch and recreate it, then reconnect their virtual NIC to the new vswitch.
• Admin command prompt, do “netcfg -d” will nuke all the vswitch settings so that you can start from scratch.

Microsoft today announced a new update for Microsoft Band that includes improved sharing experience, golf touament mode and more. When you share on social network or via message after a calorie-blasting workout, epic bike ride or the best night’s sleep you can remember, your friends can click through to a public dashboard that includes even more of your impressive stats. The new Touament Mode for Golf will allow you to play a round while sticking to United States Golf Association rules for competitive play. The band will still track your round of play and your health activity, but hide your step count, distance and heart rate during your round, then have a summary waiting for you in the Microsoft Health app and dashboard upon completion.

Track your distance with Guided Workouts

Whether you’re training for a 5k or half-marathon, or just want to map your distance biked within a Guided Workout, now you can! We enhanced the Guided Workout experience for Microsoft Band with the ability to now track your distance. You’ll get a notification when you reach a distance goal during a Guided Workout that includes running, walking or biking, and the display shows your distance decrease as you move. That, and you can train indoors or out—your Microsoft Band will track your distance with the pedometer if you don’t have GPS activated.

Connect to Cortana

As many of you leaed earlier this year, you can now connect your Microsoft Health account to Cortana. Once connected, Cortana will show your activity progress from your band, including steps and calories, and provide comparisons to the day prior. Microsoft today released an update for their Microsoft Translator app on both iOS and Android. On Android, Microsoft has added support for offline translations. Offline translations doesn’t meat it will do word by word translation, it comes with world’s first Deep Neural Network-powered offline engine. By downloading free offline packs, users can get near online-quality translations, even when they are not connected to the Inteet.

Deep Neural Networks, also known as Deep Leaing, is a state-of-the-art Machine Leaing technology that has been in use for almost a year by the popular Microsoft Translator cloud service to deliver high-quality translations to the many experiences that it powers — Microsoft Translator apps, Skype Translator and Bing.com/translator. By bringing this technology to offline translations on your mobile device, you will have access to the highest-quality offline translation provided. Our standard tests* have shown that it is comparable to the translations you get when connected to the Inteet, and significantly better than any offline translation experiences available previously.

Offline packs for Android are currently available in the following languages, with more on their way soon.

On iOS, Microsoft has added a new image translation feature similar to the one we have seen in Google Translator apps. This feature lets you translate text from your camera roll or saved pictures. Rather than typing the text or speaking aloud, you can translate pictures from your phone with the translation appearing in an overlay above the existing text in the picture.

Microsoft Bing team today announced a new experience with everything you need to fully prepare yourself for the upcoming 2016 Academy Awards. Bing’s Guide to the Academy Awards will include the following,

During its recent financial results call, Asus revealed that they are working a Surface clone. This upcoming 2-in-1 device will have kickstand and Type Cover like ultra-thin keyboard for typing experience. Asus will also support Active Pen on this device. It will have USB Type-C port and SD card slot as well. Asus also said that they are expecting their 2-in-1 portfolio sales to increase 50% YoY in 2016. In the past few months, we have seen several PC OEMs trying to catch up with Microsoft Surface in the 2-in-1 market. Microsoft today announced the launch of Skype Group video calling on mobile for Android and iOS devices. Skype’s video calling on mobile supports up to 25 participants at 1080p. It allows you to flip between the front and back camera during the group video call. Skype team has spent lot of time in optimizing the group video calling UI.

A view of what you’re broadcasting is always pinned to the lower right hand coer of your screen, and as more and more people are added, the call’s grid view dynamically adjusts to show you as many participants as it can. But once you hit more than seven participants, the display re-arranges things to highlight the person speaking by default, with all the other participants lined up at the bottom of the screen. You can then swipe through that lineup and find an individual caller and “pin” them to the screen so you always see what they see rather than let Skype pick your view.

Microsoft worked with Intel to enable its SILK Super Wide Band audio codec to run on Azure servers powered by Intel CPUs. Skype Mobile users in the US and weste Europe will get this feature first and worldwide availability is before end of this March.

Wunderlist team worked closely with the Outlook team to bring you a simple way of getting your tasks out of your inbox and into your to-do lists.

How it works?

• When you come across an email that’s more task than correspondence, click the Wunderlist button.
• You’ll see the add-in slide into your email.
• Wunderlist then instantly tus the subject into the task name and the body into a note.
• Select the list you wish to send your email to, set a helpful Reminder, then click ‘Add to Wunderlist’.

Without ever having to leave Outlook, you can quickly and easily plan your day. You can also share your Wunderlist lists easily while writing your mail.

When you’re writing or replying to an email just click on the Wunderlist button. Your lists will then show in the right sidebar. Choose the relevant list, click ‘Share List’ and the rest is magic! When your friend or teammate opens up the email, all they need to do is click on the ‘View List’ button and they can start collaborating right away.

Outlook add-in is available for users of the new Outlook.com, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016, and Outlook on the web for Office 365 subscribers.

Microsoft Research announced WorldWide Telescope (WWT) project back in 2007. After several years, Microsoft open sourced the project in July 2015. Today, Microsoft announced that they are moving WWT from Microsoft Research to become part of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and a migration to Microsoft Azure.

The adoption of WWT by the AAS is a great example of a public-private partnership. WWT started as a research project at Microsoft Research (MSR), which distributed the WWT software for free. At MSR, Curtis Wong was the inventor of WWT, and Jonathan Fay was its principal software architect. The desktop (Windows) version of WWT is very popular, with millions of users including amateur astronomers, educators, and planetarium presenters. The advent of a fully Web-based version of WWT several years ago allowed the program to start gaining real traction with the professional community. The WWT Web-based tools (API) are highly customizable and have been used to create interfaces that highlight and serve specific survey data, as well as to make viewers that link literature and data, such as the ADS All-Sky Survey, which allows users to lea which parts of the sky have been studied when, and for what reason.

Microsoft Research, in cooperation with the .NET Foundation, open-sourced WWT in 2015, so that an even broader community of users could begin to contribute both code and guidance to the project. In parallel, the AAS appointed the WWT Task Force, chaired by AAS Vice-President Jack Bus, in early 2015 to review the possibility of taking on the WWT. The task force sought community input and then put a plan for participation to a Council vote at the 227th AAS meeting in Kissimmee, Florida, on Monday. After debate and discussion, the Council agreed to invest significantly in the effort and to implement the plan developed by the task force.

Microsoft has finally fixed the sleep issue on the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. The software giant today released a new firmware update for the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 which fixes the sleep issue, and brings some other fixes. To get the latest update, head over to Settings > Update & Security and check for updates — you should receive the “System Hardware Update – 2/17/2016”.

Microsoft’s Panos Panay stated:

Microsoft today announced the ability to audit and report on numerous activities that take place within SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business, as well as new file size limits for files uploaded to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

Auditing and Reporting:

From the Reports tab in the Compliance Center, you can create activity reports by clicking Start recording user and admin activities. Activities include file and folder actions such as view, create, edit, upload, download and delete; sharing actions like invitation and access requests; and synchronization activity. Reports can be tailored by user or by file within a specific date range. They could be used for instances like a compliance review where an admin or compliance officer needs to understand actions taken by one or more individuals within their OneDrive for Business or the actions taken by all people on a specific file in a SharePoint Online document library.

New File Size:

Microsoft is increasing the per file size limit to 10 GB. This applies to files uploaded to Team Sites, Office 365 Groups and OneDrive for Business, as well as for videos uploaded into the Office 365 Video portal. Office 365 customers no longer need to leave big files stranded on file shares and local hard drives.

Storage increase:

Microsoft is increasing default storage to 1 TB plus 0.5 GB per user to use across SharePoint Online, Office 365 Groups and Office 365 Video—up from the previous allocation of 10 GB. This is in addition to the unique default per-user OneDrive for Business storage space and individual storage provided for user email inboxes. Office 365 customers on our premium Enterprise, Govement and Education plans will receive OneDrive for Business unlimited storage, and the first stage of providing 5 TB for each user is now complete.

The HoloLens, Microsoft’s augmented reality headset has a new competition. It’s called the Meta Vision, and its first images  have surfaced on the Web, courtesy of Robert Scoble.

Meron Gribetz, the creator of the Meta Vision appeared on TED conference to demo his new product. The video of the demonstration, however, won’t be available to general public till March 2.

Scoble says he is thrilled about the Meta Vision, adding that he believes VR/AR is the most important new category since the original Macintosh. He added that Meta Vision has advantages over Microsoft’s HoloLens, though he refused to specify what these advantages are at this point. Gribetz hasn’t yet disclosed the price of the Meta Vision or when it will become available.

Over on its website, Meta Vision has a teaser video in which it documents reactions of many celebrities including Will.i.Am after they first tried the product. Spoiler alert: everyone in the video has pleasing things to say about it.

From what we can summarize, the Meta Vision, much like the HoloLens offers users with the ability to augment three-dimensional objects. It also allows users to manipulate with these objects.

Microsoft also has a talk scheduled for tomorrow, where Alex Kipman, creator of Kinect, HoloLens is expected to publicly demonstrate some exciting features of HoloLens, and how it is trying to education, health and other industries. To recall, Nasa recently shared how it was using Microsoft’s HoloLens to allow its scientists to “walk on Mars without leaving their office.”

Competition in the augmented reality or virtual reality space, which are still in the nascent phase, will only have benefit to the users as well as the companies. Knowing somebody else too is working in this largely untapped technology space will push companies to drive innovation, and help these devices become available to public sooner.

Back in 2015, Google allowed users to use their Outlook.com email (or other email services) on the Gmail app for Android. Today, the company is introducing a new feature called Gmailify which will allow Outlook users to use their account on Gmail’s mobile apps and continue  to use Gmail’s best features — without even usign a @gmail.com address. Gmailify will allow Outlook users to use Gmail’s spam protection feature, as well as the folder organization feature which can be quite useful at times. Additionally, Gmailify will allow you to integrate the travel and hotel reservations from your email with Google Now, which can also be very useful if you use an Android device.

It is not yet know if Google will be rolling out Gmailify to the Web and iOS. Nonetheless, if you own an Android device and want to use your Outlook.com email with it, go ahead and give it a try. And if you don’t want to use Gmail, you can continue to use Outlook’s official app which also offers a very good experience (and it’s probably the best Android email client out there, too).

Microsoft’s new Outlook.com experience is finally out of preview. Today, the company announced that the new Outlook.com experience will be rolling out to users worldwide. The new Outlook.com experience offers a cleaner user interface which allows the app to offer a better user experience. The new experience also introduces a tonne of new features and integrations within Outlook.com, which will help you get things done quicker.

The update introduces support for add-ins, and users will be able to use a bunch of add-ins such as Giphy (to insert GIFs right into the emails), Yelp, Wunderlist, Uber, Eveote, and Paypal. These are just some of the add-ins which will improve the experience on Outlook.com and provide more features.

Microsoft says the company is rolling out the new Outlook.com experience to millions of accounts each week, starting today. If you are in the North America region, you will be able to get the new Outlook.com experience right now by signing up for a new account – and if you don’t live in North America, you will have to wait for a few weeks to get the new update.
